Many world-renowned facilities have presented cutting-edge research and meticulous study in a laboratory. Waldmann lights provide adjustable light levels, magnification, adjustable arms, high color temperature, and accurate color rendering index, elevating them to invaluable instruments for staff at these facilities. 

MEASURING LIGHTING

There are three key measurements to consider when choosing a light for the laboratory environment: color temperature, color rendering index (CRI) and spectral power distribution (SPD).

COLOR TEMPERATURE 

Color temperature is measured in kelvin units and reflects the “warmth” or “coolness” of a light source. When choosing a laboratory fixture the optimal color temperature is 5000K. If the color temperature is less than this, an orange/yellow cast (warm) will distort the true color. If the color temperature is beyond this range, the color will be distorted with a blue cast (cool).

 

COLOR RENDERING INDEX (CRI)
 
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures light‘s ability to present color “naturally,” including all frequencies of the color spectrum. The higher the CRI, the more accurately the light source is able to represent the object in its “true color.” A low CRI will indicate that the color is being distorted, lacking a full display of the color spectrum. A high color rendering index – at least 80 – is recommended for dental labs.
 

Spectral Power Distribution

Natural daylight is the best light we humans know. Our vision is deeply influenced by it. The full spectrum LED technology with a color rendering value of Ra>95 produces a light with a homogeneous light spectrum that is very close to daylight. To measure how well a luminaire does this, refer to a spectral power distribution (SPD) curve to show the precise color output of the source across the visible spectrum.
